Crystal Lake, the Friday the 13th prequel series at Peacock, continues to move ahead after Bryan Fuller’s exit from the production last May.

Today, we got some exciting casting news: Deadline reports that Linda Cardellini (Dead to Me, pictured above in Hawkeye) will star in the series as the iconic Pamela Voorhees. Deadline describes Cardellini’s character as “a mother who had given up a singing career to raise a special needs child and takes a dark turn when she loses her son.”

Her son, for those not fully entrenched in Friday the 13th lore, is Jason Voorhees, a boy who drowned at Camp Crystal Lake and comes back in later franchise installments as a hockey mask-wearing murderer. In the original Friday the 13th film, however, it’s Pamela who’s behind all the killings at the camp. This is pure conjecture on my part, but perhaps we’ll see her origin story as a mass murderer as the series progresses. One thing we know we won’t see is Jason and his hockey mask, as Crystal Lake doesn’t have rights to movies beyond the 1980 original. Jason’s tragic death in the lake, however, remains fair game.

While the premise of the series remains unknown, we do that Brad Caleb Kane—whose other credits include the upcoming IT: Welcome to Derry as well as Warrior, Black Sails, Fringe, and Moonhavenhas taken over the series and serves as its creator, writer, showrunner and executive producer.

No news yet on when the Peacock and A24 production will start streaming on a television near you. icon-paragraph-end
